Job Description

Role Overview
As Canopy's Curious Fox (Research Strategic Lead), you'll guide our research initiatives to save the world’s most critical forests. Your role will be pivotal in developing strategic research that influences global conservation efforts, using your sharp insights to drive impactful campaigns. You’ll bring together your science and conservation networks to amplify our research reach, lead the charge on groundbreaking forest solutions, and mentor the next generation of conservation researchers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work with the Impact team to define goals and carve out research strategies that guide our campaigns.
  • Lead, coach, and grow our Senior Researcher while overseeing cross-functional research projects.
  • Utilize tools like ForestMapper and the EcoPaper Database to harness insights that challenge misleading environmental narratives.
  • Partner with scientists and research institutions to produce cutting-edge conservation research.
  • Share findings with teams and partners, transforming complex research into actionable insights and accessible storytelling.

What We’re Looking For:
  • A Master's degree in a related field (Environmental Science, Forestry, Ecology, etc.).
  • Five or more years of leading research projects, with experience in strategy, team management, and collaboration.
  • Expertise in data analysis, research design, and making numbers talk to all audiences.
  • Strong knowledge of forest conservation, climate change, biodiversity, and Indigenous land rights.
  • Proficiency with research tools, databases, and software (mapping tools, GIS, etc.).
  • Excellent communication skills, team spirit, and a great sense of humour!
How to Apply:

Complete an exercise:
A core part of Canopy’s work is collaborating with brands to scale up adoption of alternative forest-free fibres that reduce logging pressure on Ancient and Endangered Forests. As an emerging market solution, these “Next Gen” materials can be seen as unfamiliar territory, causing some companies to be reluctant to invest in something new. Addressing their concerns often requires Canopy to develop compelling, evidence-based assets and speaking points about the benefits of Next Gen materials. Common topics include: carbon saving potential (compared to virgin wood fibre), cost/ premiums, proof of recyclability, ability to meet food safety standards. Choose one of these topics and prepare a one-page outline that scopes a research project aimed at addressing the concern. Your outline should define your overarching objective and outcome(s) for the project, identify key research questions we would need to answer to provide a robust, evidence-based response, and propose research methods that would enable effective completion of the project. Assume the project has a target timeline of no longer than six months. Please spend no more than two hours on this exercise. The focus is on demonstrating your thought process, problem-solving abilities, and approach to research.

Send us a Cover Letter and CV detailing why you’re the perfect fit for this role, addressed to the hiring panel, along with the exercise above and email to chiefcharmer@canopyplanet.org and mark the subject line “Curious Fox!”
