Bonsai Leadership Group is excited to support Beyond Carbon Fund and Beyond Carbon Action Fund’s search for a Political & Advocacy Director.  
 
ABOUT BEYOND CARBON FUND & BEYOND CARBON ACTION FUND  
The Beyond Carbon campaign is a nationwide initiative of Bloomberg Philanthropies aimed at ending our dependence on fossil fuels and advancing the transition to a 100% clean energy economy. Building off the success of Beyond Coal, the Beyond Carbon campaign provides quality data and research, works with state leaders to advance clean energy policy, and supports grassroots organizations and litigation efforts aimed at putting a halt to the expansion of methane gas plants.  

Beyond Carbon Fund, a project of New Venture Fund, and Beyond Carbon Action Fund, a project of Sixteen Thirty Fund, are regranting partners working with Beyond Carbon and advocates around the country to build on the leadership and climate progress underway in our states, cities, and communities.

THE OPPORTUNITY
 
The Political & Advocacy Director will work closely with the Executive Director to develop and execute strategic political and advocacy plans for Beyond Carbon Fund and Beyond Carbon Action Fund on state and local levels to advance clean energy policy.  


The visionary, collaborative, and highly strategic Political & Advocacy Director will research, analyze, and develop strategies to ensure partners have the capacity and vision to meet program goals, including overseeing an electoral and advocacy portfolio to influence public policy on behalf of Beyond Carbon Fund and Beyond Carbon Action Fund. This includes coalition building, legislative advocacy, oversight of electoral engagement, and advising executive leadership on emerging trends and critical issue areas.  


The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in clean energy, climate policy, and the regulatory landscape related to coal, methane gas and renewable energy. They will also possess a track record of leading high-impact advocacy efforts and influencing public policy at multiple levels of government.  

The Political & Advocacy Director will be responsible for the following: 
 
Strategy Development  
  • Partner with leadership and key partners to develop electoral and advocacy priorities, work with key partners to develop strategies, and evaluate the effectiveness of efforts year over year to ensure success of program goals. 
  • Build relationships with advocacy groups and other relevant stakeholders to identify and evaluate legislative and electoral strategies Beyond Carbon partners plan to deploy. 
  • Monitor and analyze state and local legislative and electoral developments, identifying opportunities to advocate for policy changes or adjust strategy as necessary. 
  • Collaborate with internal teams, coalition partners, and policy experts to develop and promote effective policy solutions and legislative and electoral strategies.  
  • Coordinate closely with the Program and Grants team on strategy and assess the impact of particular tactics and campaigns.  
  • Oversee and manage milestones, timelines, and deliverables to ensure progress and impact, ensuring annual priorities successfully link with Beyond Carbon‘s goals.  
 
Communications  
  • Lead the development of compelling advocacy and electoral materials, including reports, fact sheets, talking points, and presentations, to educate partners and key stakeholders about issues that reflect organizational priorities. 
  • Collaborate with the Funder Communications & Content Director to communicate timely updates on policy progress, milestones, and advocacy wins.  

Coalition Building & Advocacy
 
  • Identify, establish, and sustain coalitions with other organizations, nonprofits, and leaders to advance shared policy goals.  
  • Cultivate and maintain trusting relationships with organizations and consultants to ensure success of advocacy and electoral strategies.  
  • With support from the Political and Advocacy Program Manager, determines strategy behind partner convenings, including the timing, subject matter, and agenda and works with partners to develop materials and presentations.  
 
Team Leadership and Development 
  • Provide regular feedback, performance reviews, coaching, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for team members to support their growth and effectiveness.  
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive, high-performing team culture focused on accountability, impact, and continuous improvement.  
 
 
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & ATTRIBUTES 
Candidates from a range of backgrounds are welcome. The ideal candidate offers many of the following attributes and skills described below, but need not possess them all for consideration: 

  • 10+ years of professional experience within mission-driven organizations in the climate or environmental, philanthropy, social enterprise, policy, advocacy or electoral campaign, and/or government sectors, including at least 3 years of leadership experience. 
  • Exemplary advocacy skills with demonstrated experience in using these abilities to create, evaluate, and work with partners to successfully pass policy and/or influence political will. 
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of legislative and state policies and electoral landscapes and events directly impacting climate and environmental initiatives. 
  • Exceptional ability to develop, identify, and recommend advocacy and electoral strategies and deliverables in response to the evolving policy and regulatory environment.  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the capacity to analyze complex information and translate big ideas into actionable plans. 
  • Highly collaborative with a proven ability to build positive relationships and effectively communicate with a diverse representation of internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrated experience in grassroots organizing, leading advocacy or electoral campaigns, and managing cross-functional teams toward shared goals. 
  • Energized by working in a fast-paced environment where flexibility and creativity in managing urgent requests and reprioritization are required. 
  • Strong passion for climate and environmental issues, advocacy, and politics. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion. 
 
TRAVEL 
This role will require 10-15% of U.S.-based travel for convenings, partner meetings, staff retreats, and other programmatic initiatives. 
  
LOCATION  
This is a remote, U.S.-based position.  

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS  
The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $240,000 annually, with an anticipated starting salary dependent upon the qualifications and experience of the hired candidate.  
 
In addition, Beyond Carbon Fund and Beyond Carbon Action Fund offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes: 
 
  • 100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance for employees (and their families). 
  • Enrollment in a 401(k) retirement plan with eligibility for a 3% automatic contribution and up to a 3% employer match on 401(k) contributions.  
  • Pre-tax transportation benefits.  
  • Two hundred (200) hours of vacation time, 80 hours of health leave, up to 16 hours of casual leave, and 20 hours of volunteer leave annually.  
  • Thirteen (13) paid holidays throughout the calendar year.  
  • Twelve (12) weeks of paid family and medical leave after 90 days of employment.  
  • Monthly internet and fitness benefits and cell phone reimbursements.
