Job Description

The Field Programs Senior Manager is responsible for oversight, fundraising, staff supervision, partner collaboration, and strategic guidance for the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust’s restoration and recreation programs. This involves developing annual program priorities; reporting on grants and agreements; managing and supporting projects; tracking metrics and deliverables; and working closely with Greenway Trust staff, government agencies, nonprofits, communities, Tribes, and others.

The successful candidate will demonstrate passion, skills and understanding for connecting people and the outdoors; stewarding natural resources; planning, adapting to change; incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion; and guiding a team of motivated and knowledgeable staff.

The restoration and recreation teams work on more than three dozen individual projects and partnerships annually. This work includes:
  • Riparian stewardship and urban forest improvements (vegetation management, weed removal, tree and shrub planting, large scale weed survey and removal).
  • Technical project design and implementation (for projects such as large wood installations in streams, or trails and trailheads).
  • Trail, trailhead, and recreational facility construction and maintenance.
  • Technical expertise on developing projects, partnerships, and initiatives (climate resilience, salmon habitat recovery, trail/recreational improvements).
Organizational Overview

The Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust works to steward a diverse landscape that stretches 100 miles from the shores of Puget Sound across the Cascade Mountains to Central Washington. Designated a National Heritage Area in 2019, the Greenway landscape encompasses two million people, 28 cities, three major river systems, two Interstate highways, and 1.5 million acres (900,000 acres publicly owned). Its working lands support forest and farms on both sides of the mountains. Its waterways provide habitat for salmon. Its protected alpine wilderness includes recovery corridors for wolves, grizzly bears, and other species once hunted to regional extinction. Its expansive access to nature, including 1,600 miles of trails, is the heart of Washington’s $20 billion outdoor recreation economy. 

Vast natural resources, the nation’s 15th largest metropolitan area, and many competing interests create the potential for conflicts. Navigating these conflicts, with the goal of conserving that precarious balance between natural and built environments, is the founding and enduring purpose of the Greenway Trust.  

An early adopter of “collective impact,” the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust was founded on the belief that to grow in harmony with nature instead of consuming it, the full community must be engaged. The goal of conserving this region’s wild and green character brought together the spheres of government, industry, and conservation and community organizations for the first time. Collaboration, compromise, and common good were the rules of engagement. We are proud to say that, three decades later, they still are.  

Responsibilities

Program Management (50%)
  • Lead the collaborative creation of annual budgets (averaging $1.5-3 million).
  • Track, adjust, forecast, and report budget and yearly projections based on changes in circumstances and plans.
  • Ensure tracking of metrics and deliverables for projects, programs, and priorities.
  • Lead the development and tracking of projects and annual programmatic goals and priorities.
  • Manage multiple high-priority projects and initiatives of various complexity and timelines.
  • Incorporate organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts into program priorities, projects, and operations.
  • Work with staff on risk management, safety, and field operations.
Fundraising/Grant Management (15%)
  • Raise and secure funds for established restoration and recreation programs from annual public and private grants, fee-for-service agreements, contracts, collaborations, and partnerships. Supported by the fundraising and operations teams and other staff.
  • Ensure accurate regular reporting and/or billing on grants and agreements.
Staff/Team Supervision (20%)
  • Supervise a team of four full-time regular restoration and recreation employees who oversee annual seasonal staff and are responsible for direct project implementation.
  • Coordinate across organizational program staff to ensure communication between teams, identify cross-program opportunities, and set organization-wide priorities.
Partnership Coordination (10%)
  • Act as a Greenway Trust representative of the Greenway Trust in meetings with agency partners, community organizations, nonprofits, and regional coalitions.
  • Establish, develop, and maintain relationships with partners new and old.
Other (5%)
  • Perform other duties as situations require or as assigned by supervisor.
Experience

  • Project Management: Managing field-based projects of varying size and complexity. Demonstrated success and increased responsibility, planning, implementation, and completion of projects of different scopes and scale.
  • Budget Management: Understanding, development and management of program and/or project budgets. This includes budget development, quarterly reporting, invoicing, adaptive budget management, reconciliation, and forecasting.
  • Staff Supervision: Successfully supervising, coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Writing: Excellent writing skills, preferably with grant and report writing experience.
  • Partner Engagement: Established and successful partnership development, having worked with a variety of community partners, government agencies, and/or Tribes to plan, develop and implement projects or initiatives.
  • Conservation: Familiarity with conservation topics which may include ecological restoration, salmon/fisheries recovery, forest health, trail construction and maintenance, field crew management, public land or natural resource management. Experience with these topics within the context of the Pacific Northwest and/or within the nonprofit sector is beneficial.
Pay

Pay range for this position is $80,000 to $100,000 annually. Pay for new hires starts at $80,000 to $90,000. This position has the potential to grow annually with time and demonstrated success.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time, exempt position working Monday through Friday, with regular required availability by phone on mornings, afternoons, and some weekends, and attendance and support for occasional evening and weekend meetings and events. A typical week will involve two half-days meeting in person at the Field Office and/or site visits, and then will consist primarily of remote work and virtual meetings with Greenway Trust staff and partners.

Work Location

This position is based out of the Greenway Trust’s field office in Issaquah. The position is hybrid with the ability to work from home, the Greenway Trust’s Seattle office, and the Issaquah field office. Monthly in-person staff meetings are held at various locations between Seattle and Snoqualmie Pass.
