Job Description

The Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) has an immediate opening for a Project Manager, Energy Storage. 

This position will work on CESA’s energy storage-related projects involving state policy, state program development, and project implementation and will also participate in CESA’s research and outreach related to electricity system load growth and the impact of data centers. Through this work, the Project Manager will engage with other organizations including the Energy Storage Technology Advancement Partnership (ESTAP), the Energy Storage Policy for States Project, the National Community Solar Partnership+ (NCSP+), the Virginia Economically Disadvantaged Communities Energy Resilience Study, and the National Consortium for the Advancement of LDES (Long Duration Energy Storage) Technologies.

CESA is a leading bipartisan US coalition of state energy agencies working together to advance the rapid expansion of clean energy technologies and bring the benefits of clean energy to all.  CESA works with its members, which are mostly state agencies, to develop and implement effective clean energy policies and programs. About the Position 
The Project Manager will conduct research and perform administrative tasks related to CESA energy storage projects and will manage specific aspects of those projects as outlined below. The Project Manager will report to CESA’s Senior Project Director.  

Responsibilities include:  

Meetings, Webinars, and Administrative Work:  

  • Work with CESA colleagues and representatives from national laboratories and the U.S, Department of Energy (DOE) on energy storage project development, management, and reporting. This work will entail:  
    • frequently engaging with and sustaining positive working relationships with engineers from the DOE, the national labs, utilities, and other industry stakeholders 
    • convening and managing meetings 
    • identifying expert speakers on topics of interest and securing their participation in webinars and conferences  
    • fulfilling monthly and quarterly project progress reporting requirements 
    • tracking progress on multiple projects, reports, and case studies 
  • Plan, coordinate, and moderate monthly meetings of working groups including the CESA Energy Storage Policy Working Group, the Regulators’ Energy Storage Working Group, and the NCSP+ Solar+Storage Working Group with state energy agencies. Organize working group activities, presentations, and discussions. 
  • Assist CESA’s Communications Manager and other colleagues in the planning and production of webinars and publications. This may include scheduling various elements of the webinar or publication process, coordinating with colleagues and consultants to meet deadlines, and pulling together elements of publications such as graphics, photos, text, and boilerplate language.  
  • Facilitate meetings with Sandia National Laboratories, other national laboratories, and other partners in the Long Duration Energy Storage Consortium project. This may include coordinating, scheduling, and moderating meetings, as well as taking and distributing meeting notes, assisting with reporting, holding information-sharing events (both internal and public-facing), and other tasks.  
  • Support CESA’s work with the Virginia Department of Energy and project partners to help remote and historically underserved communities develop clean energy resilience plans. This may include helping to develop metrics, case studies, and webinars; participating in meetings; note-taking; and other tasks. 

Writing and Research: 

  • Support state policymakers and regulators by conducting surveys, interviews, research, writing, and presentations.  
  • Help develop public information-sharing reports, white papers, webinars, case studies, and blogs on energy storage topics and electricity system load growth. This may include conducting independent research, creating and maintaining resource lists and databases, drafting reports, and other tasks. 
  • Work collaboratively with CESA staff to support CESA’s state members in their work. This may include participating in research and analysis, convening, and knowledge-sharing activities related to energy storage, solar+storage, resilience, interconnection, energy storage project economics, incentive program design, renewables, electrification, load growth, the impact of data centers, and other related topics. 
  • Engage in ongoing learning about energy storage technologies, policy, markets, and program design, as well as related topics such as wholesale energy markets, the electric grid, microgrids, virtual power plants, and other topics as required. 

Other responsibilities as needed and appropriate.


Desired Qualifications

  • Issue familiarity: Prior knowledge of or experience in clean energy technologies, especially energy storage, and state energy policy 
  • Research and writing: Proven ability to research and assimilate new information; aptitude for writing that conveys complex information or technical concepts in a digestible and approachable manner 
  • Organized and able to adeptly prioritize work: Strong project management skills, excellent attention to detail, and ability to juggle multiple projects and competing priorities 
  • Committed to social justice and equity: Understanding of the energy challenges facing low-income households and environmental justice communities, as well as the needs of the changing electric grid and state and national decarbonization goals 
  • Self-motivated: Ability to work independently in a remote setting while also being able to recognize when it’s appropriate to involve stakeholders or colleagues and ask for help 
  • Collaborative: Ability to work with project partners and colleagues from many different backgrounds, including engineers, policymakers, regulators, community organizers, and stakeholders 
  • Comfort with public speaking 

Education and Experience 

  • At least two years’ relevant work experience with a preference for: 
  • Experience working on energy storage or clean energy projects, programs, and/or policies 
  • Experience working on energy equity issues 
  • Experience working with and/or for state government 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office products 
  • Experience working remotely 


Availability and Work Environment 

This is a full-time, exempt position, with responsibilities commencing upon hire. 

CEG employees can choose to work remotely or in the Montpelier, VT office, or a combination of remote and in-office work. We offer a flexible workplace environment with a casual dress code. Salary and Benefits 

The anticipated starting salary is $53,000 - $63,000, depending upon prior experience and qualifications. Excellent benefits package includes health, dental, and vision insurance with 10% employee cost contribution; life insurance; generous matching of retirement plan contributions; starting four-weeks paid time off; and paid sick days, parental leave, and company holidays. 


Travel 

Occasional domestic travel 4-6 times per year is expected. Business travel typically lasts from two to three days with some weekend travel necessary.
