Job Description

The Managing Editor will work closely with the Executive Director to create an editorial direction, generate story ideas and assess pitches from freelance contributors, manage the editorial calendar and ensure consistent, timely and compelling stories are released. They will also work to build partnerships with like-minded organizations in Alaska, British Columbia, northern California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and the Yukon. This is an exceptional opportunity to be part of building and expanding an emerging hybrid media organization, ideal for someone who is deeply passionate about solutions-focused journalism and creative storytelling.

Role Responsibilities:
  • Generate approach for Magic Canoe stories and content. 
  • Commission stories, and assess pitches for stories, from a variety of freelance journalists, content creators and writers in the western U.S. and Canada. 
  • Manage publication schedules and ensure publication of 2-3 stories per week. 
  • Identify and contract with photographers, graphic designers, videographers and others. 
  • Manage editorial budget for organization.
  • Edit all written content.
  • Write articles and headlines; prepare copy and cutlines for publication. 
  • Supervise the Digital Coordinator to ensure stories are widely disseminated online. 
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to build and manage internal processes relating to HR, editorial calendars and story development.
  •  Scout for new and emerging talent, and build relationships with journalists, photographers and content creators in the bioregion. 
  • Build relationships with collaborative partner organizations '
Required Skills and Attributes:
  •  Keen understanding of environmental, social justice and regenerative movements in the Pacific Northwest. 
  • Experience with administration, project management and managing a group of freelance writers and content developers. 
  • Experience providing editorial direction and edits to a wide range of articles. 
  • Exceptional writing skills, both in editorial and marketing. 
  • Organized and able to manage multiple deadlines and priorities at once.
  • Experience with subscription, membership and/or donor management. 
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Mailchimp. 
 Role Details: 
  •  Remote, part-time contract position. 
  • Up to 20 hours per week. Flexible hours with some set times for team meetings. 
  • Must live in the Salmon Nation bioregion (Alaska, British Columbia, northern California, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and the Yukon).
